The Corrugated Packaging Alliance (CPA) today released a new infographic depicting the twenty-year growth in recovery of corrugated materials for recycling. Corrugated “cardboard” is recycled more than any other packaging material in the U.S.
New scientific research indicates that corrugated packaging keeps fruit fresher and safer than reusable plastic crates (RPCs) and can significantly reduce contamination from transferred microorganisms.
The U.S. recovery rate of old corrugated containers (OCC) rose by 3.7 percentage points in 2015 to a record-high 92.9 percent. The increase was driven by a 3.5 percent increase in domestic consumption of recovered fiber and a 10.6 percent jump in OCC exports.
“We have been reluctant to comment on IFCO’s latest LCA without having access to the actual report that identifies the boundaries, key assumptions and methodologies used in the study. Transparency is a key LCA requirement and publishing the full facts allows them to be fairly and accurately understood”, said CPA Executive Director Dennis Colley. “We are disappointed in the approach used by IFCO to announce the report’s findings.”
